Historically, at the start of Spiritualism, mediums communicated with spirits through "ghost knocking" or "ghost rapping," in which a medium would invoke a spirit by lighting a candle and incense to enter a trance and then asking questions to which a spirit would knock their responses, one for yes, and two for no.
By the late 1800s, due to Spiritualist camps in Ohio and New York that spread the practice, spirit boards (known today by their mass-produced Fuld name, Ouija boards [learn their history at the Hallow's Eve Party Divination site]), and spirit channeling became more popular ways to commune with the dead rather than the laborious, time-consuming, tedious process of asking questions and having a ghost answer yes or no questions by knocking, or rapping, and added a bit more excitement.
